Cervantes

Played by Juan Luis Galiardo
The Miguel de Cervantes who appears in this movie is an extreme man who is in conflict with himself. He has a personality that ranges from euphoria to depression. He is simultaneously strong and sensitive, imaginative, but  realistic. He is a man capable of rage attacks that barely control his noble feelings and his sense of justice. He is proud but accustomed to oblige with a deeply pessimistic "dark side " that he tries to mask with humor.

When the story begins he is in a moment of deep personal and creative crisis. He has lived long and his life has not been easy at all. He has fought in Lepanto, losing a hand and has spent five years in the prisons of Algiers . His return to Spain , his native land, has been disastrous. He has economic problems, his marriage does not work (he lives separated from his wife) and his desire to leave for the Indies is repeatedly denied.

Cervantes has established himself as a literary author and although he has released a novel (Galatea) and has seen his first theatrical works represented, he feels a deep suspicion towards his own talent and towards the reception that his works have in this country which he considers as corrupt and mediocre.

He is fifty-something. He knows that his physical energy could start abandoning him. Irony and intelligence are his weapons against the physical decline that he feels as a personal threat and the moral abandonment that he contemplates around him with sadness and indignation.

As the story unfolds, we will see how Miguel evolves from a deep crisis and towards the recovery of the desires of creating. The inspiration for this change will be Leonor, a woman who not only gives him back the desires of inventing and of living, but  helps
him find the man with so much talent within himself. He will come to realize that he is  the only one capable of challenging himself to write something truly unforgettable.
