| Thiago Soares is SWOON-worthy in every respect. Tall, lithe, and unconventionally handsome, he has a very cheeky grin to go with the twinkle in those mischievous brown eyes. The twenty-two year old Brazilian joined the Royal Ballet in September 02 at First Artist level. He has proved to be such a versatile, enthusiastic and, yes, just such a talented dancer that he has been promoted twice, to soloist in 03 and to First Soloist this July. His meteoric rise is one he richly deserves. Thiago's early training was, of all places, at Circus School! If his dancing potential had not been spotted at the age of sixteen he could now be found perhaps as an acrobat or clown in the Brazilian Big Top! Luckily he was guided correctly and trained at the National Ballet School of Brazil, joining the company when he was eighteen. He entered competitions both at home and abroad, winning a silver prize in Paris. He spent almost a year in Russia as an apprentice, a rare chance for an 'outsider', and won a gold medal in the Moscow International Competition in 2001. Since joining the Royal Ballet the roles he has undertaken have ranged from the sublime majesty of Solor in La Bayadere to the ridiculous; he was a magnificent Ugly Sister in Cinderella, resplendent in Pompadour wig and prosthetic nose. Such roles allow his natural gift as an actor to shine through as well. His recent Tybalt in Romeo and Juliet was quite terrifying in his aggression (he managed to draw blood from his opponent Edward Watson as Romeo!!) whilst his dignified High Brahmin in Bayadere received much praise for the characterization he brought to a role which is rarely noted by any critic. Other roles have included the fiendish Carabosse in Sleeping Beauty, handsome Prince Desiree in the same ballet, a delightful Summer in the Summer pdd of Bintley's Les Saisons, the hypnotic Rasputin in Anastasia, lead Hungarian Officer in Mayerling, a rascally Dorkon in Daphnis and Chloe and a sympathetic rugged Hilarion in Giselle. He also turned heads appearing as a guest artist with Marianella Nunez, at the International Gala in Vail, Colorado this summer. Thiago’s roles for next season include Colas in La Fille Mal Gardee opposite Belinda Hatley, and roles in Sylvia, Cinderella and Daphnis and Chloe. It won’t be too long before this phenomenally talented dancer will be given further principal roles, such as he’s danced before in his native Brazil; a repertoire which included Romeo, Siegfried, Albrecht, Franz in Coppelia, Basilio, Prince in Nutcracker and Solor. Thiago’s dancing is electrifyingly good and has caught every critic’s eye. Ismene Brown of the Daily Telegraph said of his recent Onegin: "A rare artist is shaping up in the company. Thiago Soares's adventurous progress through both princely and character roles has shown him as possessing an exciting actor's curiosity as well as exceptional technical flair." "Soares also pirouettes like a demon, his fiery technique bringing rare tears of gratitude to my eyes" She’s not alone in her lavish praise as it’s quite clear that Thiago's career looks set to soar….right up to the skies. Prepare for take-off. Author: Mandy Kent August 2004 |
